PHRYGIA. Peltae. Severus Alexander, 222-235. Diassarion (Orichalcum, 27 mm, 7.94 g, 12 h). ΑΥΤ Κ Μ ΑΥΡ ϹЄΒ ΑΛЄΞΑΝΔΡΟϹ Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust of Severus Alexander to right, seen from behind. Rev. ΠЄΛΤΗΝΩΝ ΜΑΚЄΔΟΝΩΝ Tyche standing front, head to left, holding rudder in her right hand and cornucopiae in her left. RPC VI online 5637 = SNG Righetti 1210 (same dies). Of the highest rarity, the second known example. A lovely coin with an attractive green patina. Some deposits, otherwise, good very fine.

The reverse legend on this issue is most likely a reference to the settlement of Macedonian soldiers in Peltae in the Hellenistic period. Many of these settlers arrived as exiles in Asia Minor following the defeat of Perseus against the Romans in 168 BC and the subsequent expulsion of the surviving Macedonian military elite from their native land. Here they were warmly welcomed by the Attalids, who settled them as military colonists in various cities across their newly gained holdings in western and central Asia Minor
